Daniel Radcliffe, best known as Harry Potter, gave a recent interview to GQ magazine and he talked about Lana Del Rey.

GQ.com: Given that you were hosting Saturday Night Live when she performed, have you listened to the Lana Del Rey album yet?

DR: I haven’t had a chance to yet but I’m sure it’s very good. It took me a while to get into “Video Games” but it has really grown on me.  I just felt awful for her. I didn’t actually see the performance – and I still haven’t. I saw the rehearsal and I know what I’m going to see: a girl frightened. She only played her first big gig in America maybe a couple of months before.  She’s a sweet girl who has got a great voice and I think there’s a lot there, provided people give her a chance. It’s kind of sad when you have to arrive on the scene fully fledged, where there is no time for growth in front of an audience. How old is she, 25? If I showed half the journalists that wrote bad things about Lana Del Rey what they had written when they were her age or younger, they would be mortified. There is a pressure now to be the finished article as soon as people see you.

“Oh Jesus, I’m everywhere,” winces Daniel Radcliffe apologetically. “How irritating it must be for people, to be bombarded with me!” The gentleman formerly known as Harry Potter is being modest. The world-conquering wizard franchise may have come to an end but the public zeal for Britain’s best known (and best paid) young actor remains unabated, with Radcliffe racking up fan-mobbed red carpets, chat show appearances and seemingly as many marriage proposals as ever while touring to promote his new film The Woman In Black. Despite the demanding schedule Radcliffe remains ebullient, leaning forward on a sofa in London’s Soho Hotel, wearing a green and navy plaid Penny Stock shirt, black jeans and high-tops. With The Woman In Black hitting cinemas this weekend, we sat down with him to talk about the unlikely style lessons of Fawlty Towers, the Lana Del Rey backlash and how to turn down overzealous Potter fans…

GQ.com: You’re a very well dressed man these days. Where do you go for suits?
DR: On this press tour there’s been a lot of Hickey Freeman and a guy called Antonio Azzuolo. He made my suit for the London premiere [pictured], which I Iove. I don’t know why this comes to mind but Nick Tentis, who is my London tailor, always references Ballard Berkeley – who played the Major in Fawlty Towers – as a point of elegance and sartorial grace.  I’m not sure Antonio has seen Fawlty Towers but that’s certainly one of the reasons I responded so well that colour and that cut. I feel very English in a suit. There’s something about being in a suit abroad, particularly in America, that feels empowering.

GQ.com: What has your stylist Sam Spector taught you?
DR: Sam is the man. If I was left to my own devices, you would see about ten T-shirts in rotation with maybe a few nice pairs of jeans – but I also like to look good. I like feeling really well put together, I just don’t have the aptitude and the knowledge to do that. Sam knows my style. I like a bit of formality sometimes. Generally speaking, if I’m going to an event I won’t turn up looking rough. It’s important to make an effort. I’m also a fan of ridiculously coloured and patterned socks. I always saw Michael Gambon wearing madly psychedelic socks and I always thought that’s it is one of the few areas where men can really express colour and have a bit of a dandyish quality to their outfit.

GQ.com: You’re a big music fan and we know you love the Libertines…
DR: I met Pete! Two days ago I met Pete Doherty in the Eurostar lounge in Paris. He’s been coming over for the News Of The World stuff. I would have loved to have talked to him about that and tell him to go in and take their bloody money from them. He walked around the corner followed by a friend and spotted me, then I saw him and just [does jaw hitting the floor expression]. We chatted for a couple of minutes and it was really nice. He’s softly spoken and much taller than people imagine. But it was a lovely chat. I feel like I’ve come full circle on my adolescence now.

GQ.com: Congratulations on winning your bet on the Super Bowl with Ellen DeGeneres. As you’re a big cricket fan, will you have any money on the Pakistan series?
DR: [Very sternly] No. I won’t – I refuse to bet against the team I want to win! Actually, that was Peter Cook’s trick apparently: whenever he was watching a football match he would always bet on the team he wanted to lose to win, so that if the team won he’d be happy and if the team lost he’d get some money. But no, I don’t think I have ever bet on cricket. I didn’t realise until recently that the reputation of the English around Europe in the 1400s and 1500s was that we were a nation of gamblers. On film sets, that’s still very true. Especially on a Potter film where ten months will go buy, you can bet on anything…and all the time. “50p the sun comes up in the next half an hour and we get the shot” Everything becomes fair game,  so now we all have an aptitude for finding wagers anywhere.

GQ.com: You’re a big art fan. What’s your advice for first time art buyers?
DR: Go and look round a load of galleries before you buy anything. Don’t walk into the first gallery you find and go “Oh that’s fantastic, I’ll have that!” The art world can be very intimidating because it’s just so vast. You talk to people who are really clued in to all the young artists and coming into it you’re never going to be able to catch up immediately, even though there’s pressure to.

GQ.com: What’s the technique to turning down a marriage proposal politely?
DR: Try and make it funny. Like if somebody shouts “I love you” I normally shout “I love you too, but I think we should see other people”.  John Larroquette, who did How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying with me in New York, suggested that I say, “I love you too, I’m so glad I don’t know you.” Which is kind of great. Generally speaking it’s always very sweet and I doubt many of them expect they’re going to get a yes, so you’re not really disappointing people too much. Just say “I’m flattered but spoken for.”

GQ.com: What was the last great book you read?
DR: We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, which is is the book that 1984 and Brave New World were inspired by. Though [Aldous] Huxley never admitted it, George Orwell said “Yes, I plagiarised all of it” and was very open about it.

GQ.com: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
DR: My Dad actually gave me a piece of advice that has seen me very well in my life: “Whenever you meet someone, make sure you get your hand out first to shake theirs.”

The Woman In Black is out now.
